Graduation and Exams

Graduation (not for me) is tomorow and then this weekend I will be studying for exams, followed by exams next week. So you wont be hearing a lot from me, until I head down to NYC for the Future of Online Advertising Conference, which I will tell you all about. If you will be there let me know.

College Essays

In preparation for next year when we all apply for college we are writing three college essays. The three topics I have chosen are.
-The Future of Education and Learning
-Connections Online versus Real World Connections
-The Democratization of the Internet
When I finish them I will post them here so that you may read them and critique them.

No Child Left Behind

Time Magazine just published an article about No Child Left Behind and what can be done to fix it. It said that we need on national test to be able to rank everybody with, get better teachers for bad schools, encourage schools to report more than they are required, and to leave school improvement to the local people who care the most.

I feel that we need NCLB but we also need something for the students who aren’t left behind. We need to help students who are talented and gifted to continue exploring their worlds and being educated in new and innovative ways. How should we do this?

Also, watch Margaret Spellings, the U.S. Secretary of Education defend the NCLB act.

Happy Memorial Day

I would like to wish you all a very Happy Memorial Day. Thank you to all of those who are no longer with us because of what they did for th

The Facebook Platform

Facebook just launched Facebook Platform which allows the applications that developers make to be built into the Facebook experience and interface. So there are some applications that are missing and that need to be made.

A Flick application that allows your Flickr photos to be viewed on Facebook.
A Del.icio.us application that allows us to have our bookmarks viewed on Facebook
A Last.fm application so that we can share music and play music on Facebook.

UPDATE: Jake Jarvis (Jeff jarvis’s Son) has written an app for Last.fm.

TED for EDucation

Christian Long is planning on launching an event/network focused on the Future of Learning. It is set to be much like TED, except for education. He is planning on having events and creating an online network. You should really read the original post from Christian Long over at Think:Lab.

Dear Heather and Derek,

Thank you for bringing us JPG Magazine. I remember when I first saw it in a book shop and when I received it in the mail. The feeling of holding the magazine and looking through was amazing because I knew that many people from around the world had come together to create this beautiful magazine. I am truly sorry for what has happened and am glad that you were able to take something away from it all.

I would also like to take this time to invite you to contribute to Grab Bag Book. This is a collaborative visual book from artists around the world who are coming together to explore their creativity.

To see a list of participating artists click here.

I wish you the best of luck on your future endeavors and can’t wait to see what is to come next.

Best,
Ethan Bodnar

Baltimore and Fredricksburg

MICA LOGO

This past weekend I took a lovely trip down south a bit with my family. Our first stop was to visit Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore. We took a tour around the beautiful campus, which is located on the outskirts of the city. Their newest building where the Graphic Design department is, is three years old and has huge glass walls that images can be projected onto. Overall, It was a wonderful school and I look forward to applying there.

Next stop was Fredricksburg, VA. We were heading down for my cousins wedding. The wedding was the next day, Saturday, at Mary Washington College. We then partied the night away at a awesome reception. Congrats to the married couple.

On sunday we headed home and hit hours and hours of traffic. Besides that it was a great trip.

The Encyclopedia of Life

When I got the email from TED, I watched the video, loved the idea and sent off an email to my Biology and Environmental Science teacher. When this comes out it will be a great tool for teachers.

“Comprehensive, collaborative, ever-growing, and personalized, the Encyclopedia of Life is an ecosystem of websites that makes all key information about life on Earth accessible to anyone, anywhere in the world. Our goal is to create a constantly evolving encyclopedia that lives on the Internet, with contributions from scientists and amateurs alike. To transform the science of biology, and inspire a new generation of scientists, by aggregating all known data about every living species. And ultimately, to increase our collective understanding of life on Earth, and safeguard the richest possible spectrum of biodiversity.”

The College Search Continues

college brochures

Today I just went through all of my college mailings and brochures. A very tedious task. I have been busy working on my portfolio and have made three posters recently.

Films

I have seen man movies lately and I thought I might as well do a quick review for each of them. Furthermore, I am taking a film study course in school.

On The Waterfront
This movie, directed by Elia Kazan, was enjoyable to watch. It received eight oscars and is in the list of Top 100 films. Marlon Brando plays the lead has a person who works on the waterfront. The story includes murder, love, and labor unions.

Punch Drunk Love
A wonderfully shot movie with a slow moving plot. Adam Sandler is the lead as he tries to figure out his life. The film has many symbols and themes which you can pick up.

Citizen Kane
The number one movie of all time, directed by Orson Welles, was truly wonderful. The film is about a man whose life story is told to you in the beginning through a news reel. The reporters then try to find out what his dying words, “Rosebud” mean. The film used flashbacks the best I have ever seen them done.

Spider Man 3
The most expensive movie of all time was not all that it was said to be. My friends and I did not enjoy the film. Sections of it were absurd, the action wasn’t the greatest, and it had around three endings. However, the trailer for Harry Potter and Pirates of the Caribbean look really good.

A Hectic Life

It has been crazy around here lately. Sorry for not posting so much.

I have been working on the spring musical at my school called AIDA. I have been going to school at 8:00 and getting home at 11:00. The musical was a great success and everybody enjoyed it. I took care of the lighting design, the program/playbill, and the poster for the show.

I took the SATs yesterday. I am not at liberty to discuss them with you. But being admitted to college based on a number is not how it should be. Advance Placement (AP) Tests are coming up this week. If I perform well on them I can earn college credit. This year I took AP US History and AP Language and Composition.

That’s it for now.
