My latest project is putting together a book on the sotry of the iPhone. It will include stories, blog posts, and photos from the community. It will document the days up to the iPhone, the release day, and the days after.

When I came up with this idea, which is the title of the post, I wasn’t quite sure what it meant. I came up with it while I was shooting some hoops and started thinking about how the education system could become sustainable, when I realized I didn’t really know the true definition of the word. I looked it up and this is what I found.
“Capable of being sustained.”
So much for not using the word in the definition which I wasn’t allowed to do throughout my entire education. What is basically means is to be capable of continuing on at a certain level or degree. At this point I realized while this could be applied to the education system it could also be applied to what the education system could produce: sustainable individuals. People that could continue their lives after their education with the skills and values that they were taught, and thus living a sustainable life.
The next logical step was to view the Wikipedia entry on Sustainability where I found the section entitled “Development Sustainability”. This section is similar to what I believe education should be like. (Sections below in italics are from the actual wikipedia entry)
A definition of development sustainability is “the continuation of benefits after major assistance from the donor has been completed”
Major assistance from the donor is what your education and parents provide you with.
Ensuring that development projects are sustainable can reduce the likelihood of them collapsing after they have just finished; it also reduces the financial cost of development projects and the subsequent social problems, such as dependence of the stakeholders on external donors and their resources.
By ensuring sustainability of the students (projects) we reduce the likelihood of them relying on their parents (stakeholders on external donors and their resources)
There are ten key factors that influence development sustainability.
1. Participation and ownership. Get the stakeholders (men and women) to genuinely participate in design and implementation. Build on their initiatives and demands. Get them to monitor the project and periodically evaluate it for results.
Get the students and the parents to participate in their education. Allow them to make more decisions and customize their education.
2. Capacity building and training. Training stakeholders to take over should begin from the start of any project and continue throughout. The right approach should both motivate and transfer skills to people.
Give students and parents more control over their education. Train them to take over their lives after their formal education is over.
3. Government policies. Development projects should be aligned with local government policies.
Follow the rules and abide to the government regulations for education.
4. Financial. In some countries and sectors, financial sustainability is difficult in the medium term. Training in local fundraising is a possibility, as is identifying links with the private sector, charging for use, and encouraging policy reforms.
Get the people more involved. Don’t just depend on the government (local and national) to provide funding. Develop new ways of fundraising online.
5. Management and organisation. Activities that integrate with or add to local structures may have better prospects for sustainability than those which establish new or parallel structures.
Get the students involved with their local community. Teach them the responsibility they have to where they live.
6. Social, gender and culture. The introduction of new ideas, technologies and skills requires an understanding of local decision-making systems, gender divisions and cultural preferences.
When trying new ways of educating, first educate the parents on your new ways and get them involved.
7. Technology. All outside equipment must be selected with careful consideration given to the local finance available for maintenance and replacement. Cultural acceptability and the local capacity to maintain equipment and buy spare parts are vital.
Don’t go crazy with technology because it will cost you later. Get access to the internet with fast and cheap computers. Make it so your technology can scale when new products come out.
8. Environment. Poor rural communities that depend on natural resources should be involved in identifying and managing environmental risks. Urban communities should identify and manage waste disposal and pollution risks.
Make the actual building itself environmentally friendly. Get the students involved and education them on the environment.
9. External political and economic factors. In a weak economy, projects should not be too complicated, ambitious or expensive.
Use your constraints to your advantage. When setting up an education system in a under developed location keep it simple and then grow.
10. Realistic duration. A short project may be inadequate for solving entrenched problems in a sustainable way, particularly when behavioural and institutional changes are intended. A long project, may on the other hand, promote dependence.
Plan projects with long time spans that allow students to develop their skills and mature. If a student is struggling in a subject, just don’t help them once on the current problem at hand. Set up a time to help them each week as new problems arise.
In conclusion, develop your education system so that it is sustainable and so that it may produce sustainable individuals.
MacBook arrived yesterday and I spent the day setting it up. I got a 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo with 2GB of memory, which has been running pretty fast with Adobe CS3 and normal computer tasks. I was finally able to download Joost, the interactive on-demand internet television application. That’s about it, I am going to be doing a bunch of design and other projects on it this summer that I look forward to sharing with you.
UPDATE: My MacBook should be arriving today on Monday the 18th just like Apple said. Sorry about that Apple. As for FedEx, they are the ones who said it would deliver on the 20th and I suppose it is good that they are delivering before, thus making their customer happy.
Apple makes wonderful products and software but I am recently having some issues with them. I placed an order for an iPod and MacBook. The iPod came when they said it would without my free laser engraving. I then contacted their support team to figure out why I couldn’t get videos on it. It was a combination of updating Quicktime and OS X which the first person I talked to couldn’t figure out.
My MacBook is supposed to be here the latest on Monday, June 18th according to the Apple Order Status website. Well according to FedEx it isn’t coming until June 20th. And according to the email Apple sent me its coming on the 19th. It has overnight shipping and was shipped today, so I don’t know how they came up with three days later. The reason it took so long to actually ship in the first place was because I ordered 2GB of memory instead of the 1GB which is what they stock. Where do you think all customized orders come from. Try China. They outsourced the very simple task of adding a little memory to China.
One last thing, I just wrote all that as I was on hold for the next representative. Although, on the positive side of things, I will end up having a great piece of hardware and some awesome software.
During this year, I had trouble finding time to read books for my own personal pleasure. Always reading a book for English class or doing other work. So I figured this summer, I better pick up some books from Amazon and get going. Before, the first couple months of summer passed by I thought it would be a good idea to come up with a list of books, so here it is.
Thinking with Type by Ellen Lupton
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling
100 Habits of Succesful Graphic Designers
TwoFaced: The Changing Face of Portraiture
(I was going to tell you about them and show some cover pictures but my list was longer than I expected and the total amount of money they are going to cost is more too.)
People have be concerned with people recording television shows and then skipping the commercials when they watch the shows. Well last night my brother TiVoed an infocommercial and showed it to my parents, trying to convince them to buy the product. Quite clever if you ask me.
The Future of Online Advertising was a great experience. It was great to be able to meet so many people doing such great things. The connections I have made are priceless and I thank everyone for the conversations that we had.
As for the speakers, some were good and some were not so good. I found that two different groups of people attended the conference. You had the media buyers and advertisers who learned many new and exciting things about the internet and advertising on it. And then you had the bloggers and creatives who knew some of the stuff that was being said already.
Overall, the conference was great and I was glad to be able to go. Thanks to Carson Systems for everything, the speakers, and all the people I met.
This is the first conference that Carsons systems have advertised for. Some of it was done through bartering and deals with blogs and publishers. The main thing that Ryan said was to measure your goals and campaigns because it is worth it. People started making comments on what they had done to advertise the conference and Ryan said that he didn’t want to make this feel like the audience had to help him. They had placed an ad in a magazine which had three things wrong with it. The colors were not well matched at all, there was no call to action, and the word “conference” was not in the ad at all.
(This presentation was done because a speaker was unable to make it)
Elctric Sheep was at the conference and gave a presentation that dealt the most with the “future” of online advertisng. They are placing advertisments in virtual worlds such as the popular Second Life. The interesting aspect of this, is that you do not have to pay to pay Second Life to advertise in their virtual world. Various types of advertisments include outdoor video displays, product placement, sponsored locations, hosting events, and your average billboard (all of which are in the virtual world). I feel that there are endless opportunities here and look forward to see how it all turns out and develops.
Jay Adelson, the CEO of Digg and Revision3, gave a nice presentation at the conference. He said that it is time for the return of old time sponsorships. By this he means having advertisers sponsor online video shows and have product placement. Thus allowing the videos to be distributed across platforms such as Apple TV, iPods, and more.
What I think we need, is to first set the standards for this and then develop an online marketplace and network where adertisers, distributors, content owners can come and make deals, get sponsorships, and communicate easily.
It has been crazy trying to get back in the swing of things after the Future of Online Advertisng conference. Here is what’s coming soon….

Hopefully, with more time on my hands cause of no school I will be blogging quite a lot. Stay tuned.
That is about it for now. Stay tuned for tomorrow night when I will fill you in about all that happened. Follow my Twitter for updates during the day tomorrow. I look forward to the speakers tomorrow and meeting more people. Can’t wait to tell you all about it.
Talked to Ted Murphy who is the CEO of PayPerPost. What his company does is pair up advertisers to bloggers. The bloggers are paid to blog about what the advertisers product is. It has been a very controversial service. I, myself don’t quite fully approve of it, but think it is an interesting model and ackowledge the fact that bloggers want to make money.
Henry Copeland of Blogads had this to say…
“I am kind of sad about PayPerPost.”
They were sponsors of the event today and have an amazing product to offer. What it does is allow you to interact with online videos. You can click on something in the video and it will give you information about it. It is kinda hard to explain so you should check it out for yourself over at VideoClix Showcase.
We talked to Darren Rowse who is the man behind ProBlogger. Here you can find all sorts of information on blogging, methods, techniques, and most of all how to make money from blogging. He is part of b5media and gave AJ and I some sweet t-shirts for the blog network. It was great to meet him and I look forward to his talk tomorow
So I met Nick today as well. He has just started AllFacebook, which is a blog about Facebook focusing on all the new apps that are coming out for it as part of the Facebook Platform. On the site he is reviewing these apps and I myself have added several that I found there. The Facebook Platform is really taking off and its going to be interesting to watch it unfolded.
I met AJ today when I overheard him talking to Nick (next post) about the Facebook Platform. His brother and his family are the people behind Wine Library and they just acquired Cork’d, which is a social network for wine. He is also the guy behind WiiTube, which is a social network for the Nintendo Wii (which is, as you know a wonderful gaming system). Here they feature videos and information about the games and much more. The network is rapidly growing and they are launching some new stuff next week. Be sure to check out his blog where he has lots of coverage of FOOA.
Ryan stopped by when I was standing around to talk to me. We talked about how the event was going, and it was going good. We talked about Future of Web Apps which is coming up in London soon. They are really growing that event and are breaking the conference down into several sections for developers and entrepreneurs. He was a really down to earth guy and it was good to meet him after emailing back and forth. Thanks Ryan, for what has been so far, a great conference.
Jim Coudal gave, what was, my personal favorite talk of the day. Basically, because what he said was not what everybody else had been saying for the whole day. He said the opposite. Jim runs The Deck, which is a design and web development targeted ad network. There are some unique features about the network that I really appreciate and enjoy. First, as Ryan Carson put it, it is a low fi, high volume network. The main concept behind it all is simplicity.
This is how The Deck works. There are around 16 sites that are part of the network. Each site features one small square ad with a small amount of text under it. That is the only ad on the whole page. Then they get around 16 advertisers to run ads on the deck. The only option they have for the most part, is a cost per influence with equally split up views across the network.
I talked to him for a minute right before he went on and the for a minute after his talk. I also gave him my Swap Meat submission. This is a program they are running where people send in items they have made for personal reasons and they are swapped with other items.
He was a nice guy and it was good to finally meet him after following Coudal Partners for so long.
So we just wrapped up a great day at the Future of Online Advertising (FOOA) in New York City. Got to hear a bunch of speakers and meet some wonderful people.
Here is what I have in store for you regarding upcoming blog posts.
-Jim Coudal, The Deck, and Swap Meat
-Ryan Carson who hosted and put on the event
-AJ Vaynerchuk of WiiTube and Nick O’Neill from Allfacebook.com
-Darren Rowse of ProBlogger
-VideoClix – online video product placement
-Ted Murphy, CEO of PayPerPost
I took some notes on all of the speakers, but instead of me typing it all up and being repetitive of what’s already out there, I am going to send you over to AJ Vaynerchuk who I met today and who live blogged the day away.
To view some photos of the event, head on over to Flickr Photos from FOOA NYC 2007
