Managing People

Managing the people that I connect with is starting to become a problem. (Not the people I talk to often, but the other ones that I have connected with that I don’t talk to as frequently) I am fine with keeping all of their names and information in some sort of address book. In this address book I could keep notes on our conversations and what the connection is between us. But the problem is that they can not see the address book. This means that they do not know our connection or can not see our past conversations. My main concern are the problems this leads to down the road. When I attempt to contact someone in a couple years that I only talked to through email a couple times, will they remember? There is a good chance that they won’t and then a valuable connection I made in the past is lost.

I can simply find the last email that was sent and click reply. That way they can see what we have said in the past, but that gets messy, you can’t change the subject, and people don’t always scroll down to see all of that. Facebook, Plaxo, and other social networks and tools don’t work well because not everybody uses them. I really enjoy the way Highrise works but not sure how to make it work for what I need.

Any suggestions out there. How can I make this work?

Portrayal of Quality

It seems like there is a certain type of website that portrays “quality”. The way it is design and the content is what leads to this portrayal of quality. It is what makes it rational for me to spend time visiting the site and absorbing what it says. These sites are placed alongside NPR and The New York Times in the quality scale. These two sites are high up on the quality scale.

Subtraction by Khoi Vinh
This site is great and features design related writing along with some great stories, thoughts, and observations about life.

The Morning News
With a diverse group of writers this site features some great essays mixed in with headlines and digests.

In my opinion we are seeing to much sharing and republishing of links and images on the web. Sites like these offer a nice substitute and provide some personal writing. The only problem I can see is that people don’t have time to read the sometime lengthy articles, but if its well written and you have an interest in what is being said, you can make time. Thanks to these two sites for what they have provided to myself and countless other readers.

The Grocery Store

For some time now I have been wanting to take a camera to the grocery store and photograph the shelves of food . A couple days ago I finally got around to it and was lucky to have one of the low-end Canon DSLR cameras from school. There is something that I really like about these photos, perhaps it is because each photo has the same color throughout it and features the same item countless times.

As Thanksgiving approaches us we should all be thankful for the food (as in the photos above) that we will enjoy and realize that others aren’t as lucky. Be thankful for your friends, family and for your life. Happy Thanksgiving!

Fall, almost Winter

Leaves

The leaves have fallen from the trees.
The yard is not raked.
The pumpkin is still on the porch.
It is cold outside.
Hats and scarves have found their way out of the closet.
Winter jackets have come along too.
It flurried the other day.
Thanksgiving is coming.

It is Fall, almost Winter.

Something in the Mail

Several weeks ago I received a letter in the mail. The envelope was a bit large and had some colorful stamps placed in the corner, which I opened it up and found inside a letter from a writer. This writer happened to be my fathers English teacher from highschool that I had met at a recent wedding. It turns out he made an attempt to email me but it was rejected. So he printed off the rejected email and sent it along with a letter explaining what had happened. I can’t begin to explain how wonderful it was to receive a paper letter in the mail. It seems that I am so used to connecting and talking with people from all over the world through email that I haven’t had that much experience with letters. Sure I receive cards, magazines and more in the mail, but this is different. To put it simply, this caused a sort of amazement and excitement when reading through it. And for that, I am grateful to have received that letter and will be writing back shortly.
