I recieved this book, Over and Over, for Christmas this year and I couldn’t have been more pleased with it. I knew it was in the box when I opened it and with much anticipation I found “a catalog of hand-drawn patterns” which is exactly what this book is. It is quite a diverse collection of patterns with many different styles presented providing a wonderful viewing experience. Well done Mike Perry.

Ross Fredella recently had a small show at the Hartford Art School entitled Recent Photographs. His work is purely beautiful and it was remarkable to see moments he captured in his quest through life.
Ross Fredella is an artist based in New York and Connecticut. Ross prefers film processes, shooting mostly 35mm and 120mm formats. While observing his personal surroundings, Ross captures images he feels deserve special attention. He is currently pursuing a BFA in photography at the Hartford Art School.
The one and only Shel Israel has announced a new book in the works entitled Twitterville. I truly enjoy the reason he chose the title of the book, it makes sense.
I call it Twitterville, because it has the feel of a small town, a place where neighbors know each other by name and reputation, help each other through a sense of community a place where the greatest influence is achieve, not by a branding budget, but the contributions made to the community.
A quick side note, I am responsible for the design and developmen of his blog, Global Neighbourhoods. Here, on his blog, he is asking all of us to become part of the book by offering him feedback on rough drafts, give him ideas, and provide anything else helpful. It is being published by Portfolio, an imprint of Penguin Books. I wish Shel the best of luck in his journey through his new book. He has the passion and dedication for the subject and I know he will have much success.
Like Naked Conversations, Twitterville is primarily a business book. It is filled with examples of how people in all sizes and kinds of business are using Twitter to thrive in these tough times. It explains how Twitter and social media shine some light to the exit from the current economic tunnel. These are times of enormous constraint. History shows us that constraints always lead to fundamental change. Old ways die and new ways emerge and thrive. Twitterville argues that in these tough times, certain business practices–those that have become bloated, inefficient and ineffective will fall by the wayside only to be replaced by newer, better ways. New, cheaper, faster technologies almost always replaces ones that have become frayed by modern times.

Today and everday I am thankful for life, family, friends, love, grass, the rain, school, art, music, our new president, graphic design, kids, elders, light, kitchen appliances, newspapers, the internet, the air, water, homes, books, cities, small towns, beauty, feelings, museums, governments, leaders, teachers, toys, plants, animals, food, farms, working people, beautiful things, and so much more. Happy Thanksgiving to you all!
Your children will smash your understanding, knowledge and reality. You will be better off. Then they will leave. You will miss them forever. But I’m not pessimistic. Future generations not burdened by the egotism of having created wealth will be able to create a righteous society, live in harmony with nature and germinate culture from the few grains not yet destroyed.
Rules are good. Break them. Good designers (and writers and artists) make trouble. Eventually you’ll forget all this but there will be plenty of new ideas to choose from. And I believe that they’ll be better.
Everything is an experiment.
The perfect state of creative bliss is having power (you are 50) and knowing nothing (you are 9). This assures an interesting and successful outcome. As soon as you learn move on. You’ll see it better if you look upside down. Success = boredom. Mistakes, misunderstandings, and mis-comprehensions provide fresh ideas.

Education is an important endeavor to pursue. First of all, it means that you have to study for a lifetime (otherwise your students can easily get ahead of you). Secondly, it means that you get to cheat your own eventual obsolescence by being an active part of the pool of evolving knowledge of a school. Third and most important, it means that you can pay back the lifelong debt to some teacher or mentor out there that gave you the spirit of hope when you needed it most. To me, education is the highest form of intellectual philanthropy.
Experimentation is also an important endeavor to pursue. You can be an experimental educator of course, but you should also be an avid experimentor in your own work. Experiments can take the form of something exotic, but they do not necessarily have to be of an outlandish nature. Often the most obvious experiment is the most difficult to perform. I believe that students have the luxury of doing daily experimentation

Last week, Robynne Raye of Modern Dog Design Co., gave a lecture on graphic design at the Hartford Art School. She gave a wonderful talk and we thank her for coming to the school.
Since co-founding Modern Dog in 1987, Robynne has continued to do work for entertainment and retail companies - both local and national - and counts poster and identity projects as some of her favorite work. She routinely ignores the boundaries between illustration, design and typography.

Lately I have been listening to Jens Lekman, The Microphones, and Phosphorescent. Take some time and listen to these three.

Frank Chimero, illustrator and graphic designer from Missouri, has recently produced a brand new website. His online presence now is all under one roof that includes his portfolio, blog, and online store. I could not be happier for Frank because the site looks wonderful and I am sure it now gives him peace of mind to have everything so well organized and presented. Congrats sir!
Along with Ben Barry, he has launched Questionable Characters. This is an online place in which they both answer questions that anyone can ask on the website, mostly about graphic design.
Frank and Ben are two of the artists in Creative Grab Bag, which my first book coming out in the summer.
Dear Mr. President-Elect,
It is my belief that the government needs to be open and transparent by using the internet.
You have stated the following as part of your Technology Agenda. “We need to connect citizens with each other to engage them more fully and directly in solving the problems that face us. We must use all available technologies and methods to open up the federal government, creating a new level of transparency to change the way business is conducted in Washington and giving Americans the chance to participate in government deliberations and decision-making in ways that were not possible only a few years ago.”
I strongly support your plan to “Open Up Government to its Citizens” and to “Bring Government into the 21st Century”. I would like to present three systems that would contribute to this plan and the work that your administration has planned out for the coming years.
1. The Online Political Information and Participation Center develops a more open and transparent government by allowing the citizens to participate in their democracy.
2. An Open Platform for Service makes it easy for anyone to serve their nation depending on their skills, time, interests, and location.
3. Internal Communications Framework creates a dynamic way for the White House and government to communicate internally.
The new brand and image that America will develop under your administration can be greatly assisted by these three systems. By opening up the government, allowing people to easily serve, and changing the way the government communicates internally, you can change the way we all communicate and work with the government. In doing so you, your administration, and the American people will be able to tell a new story to the national and international community.
I propose developing a team of four groups responsible for these three systems.
The Collection Group would be responsible for gathering and harvesting information. They would create a standardized format for all government data.
The Technology Group would develop the technology and infrastructure of each of these three systems. They would create a secure structure and online environment.
The Design Group would design the visual interface. They would make it extremely easy to navigate and present the information in a simple and interactive format.
The Outreach Group would reach out to the the national and international communities to inform them of the opportunities and information being presented in this new format.
Myself and many others strongly support your plan and encourage you to please make it a priority. I urge you to create these systems during your transition period and have them in place when you take office on January 20th, 2009. Having them in place allows you to focus on the crucial issues that the country faces and use these three new systems to work on those issues.
Please find my thoughts and ideas on these three systems in detail here.
The Online Political Information and Participation Center
The creation of an online location that would open up the government would be a milestone in how the government works. This would be the online presence of the White House and your Administration. It would be broken into three main sections including The Administration, Currently Happening, and Information. By transferring the already established online community during the campaign, there would be a solid group of citizens ready to use this online center.
The Administration section would include general information about the administration and the work that is being conducted. There would be official statements, the agenda, online media, information about the people, and more.
The Currently Happening section would cover everything that is going on within the United States government. It would be a live look at what is happening in all three branches. The information would be able to be sorted based upon People, Issues, Time, Location, and Ideas.
Here people would be able to participate and form an online community. They could voice their approval or make suggestions by leaving comments. This would be citizen involvement in the government like never before.
There would be the ability to track issues and different views. There would be profiles of all the politicians, leaders, and people, and you would be able to see who supports what. Software could be developed that connects different issues and people together based on their similarity. There would be the use of graphics and data visualization to present the information. Well designed printable versions of everything on the site would be available.
By having two different versions, a simple and advance version, the website would be a useful resource for everyone. If you just want the basic information then choose the simple version, but if you would like the entire detailed picture there would be the advance version.
This would become an online center for news, everything that is happening in the government would all be related to news stories from the press. The administration itself would release news through this site as well. It would be important for the online center to embrace criticism in the news as well and not filter anything out. Here press conferences could be broadcasted in high definition online with a live discussion happening at the same time online.
There would be an Information section on the website that would provide a guide on how to use the website. It would educate people on how the government works and provide detailed information. There would also be a part that documents the history of the nation and its policy in the past.
Important general aspects of this online center include video, audio, images, social interactions, statistics, mobile interfaces, blogs, newsletters, social networks, ability to share elsewhere online, RSS feeds, and much more. All government data would be open and transparent through this online center in a standardized format.
The center would start off for national based government and could be expanded to include tools for state and local governments to set up a presence on the site as well.
In order to invite all of the world to participate there would be translations for many different languages. You would be able to filter out the participation of people based on whether they are citizens or not.
An Open Platform for Service
In referring to your Service Agenda, you have said “When you choose to serve - whether it’s your nation, your community or simply your neighborhood - you are connected to that fundamental American ideal that we want life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness not just for ourselves, but for all Americans. That’s why it’s called the American dream.”
I propose creating an online platform that can generate ways for anyone to serve their local and national community. In your plan for creating new ways for us, the citizens of this nation to serve, I feel that you must take advantage of the internet.
By simply providing a directory of tasks and ways for people to serve we can make it possible for anyone to contribute to their local and national community. The important element is letting each person sort through the tasks and opportunities based on the time they have, their skills, interests, and location. Even if you have just thirty minutes to give, they can provide change.
Create an index of non-profit organizations and allow them to contribute and make up this directory of opportunity. Also, include tasks and opportunities that state, local, and national government have identified as important to their communities.
Present information on the rest of your plan for service for college students, for seniors, and the other aspects as well. In addition, provide resources such as other ways to contribute, collaborative projects, events, and more. By doing this we empower people to take action, do good, give back, and contribute.
This has be partly inspired by your campaign’s online center for making calls and volunteering. The key element is the simplicity in which one can find an opportunity to serve, along with the online resources and information we provide them about each opportunity.
Internal Communications Framework
While I have no knowledge of how you plan on using technology to communicate internally with your team or how you have done so during the campaign, I believe that it is crucial that your administration deploys an online framework to communicate.
In a sense this would be consider a project management system specifically for the work of the government that is completely secure. Your staff would be able to share documents, delegate work to each other, have discussions, track milestones, schedule meetings and much more.
Policy advisors could keep track of notes from meetings, have discussions online, and share input from others. Speech writers would be able to share drafts and edit them online together. While the internet can never replace actual meetings in person, it can provide useful tools to be organized and collaborate in news ways.
The framework would be able to connect with the Online Political Information and Participation Center. This would allow your staff to interact and be able to control certain aspects of the community discussion. It would also allow your staff to organize the large amount of advice that you will be getting from experts and non-experts on policy. It would be an online place of collaboration. Here everyone would have different levels of access that could be controlled based on what their area of work is.
Much of the above three systems contain original ideas but many others have written and discussed the same concepts and ideas, including your own Technology Plan. On behalf of all of them and myself I urge you to establish these three systems early on so that they may play a vital role in the rest of your agenda and how you go about working on changing our current policy. Citizen involvement in an open government, the simplicity for people to find ways to serve, and the way you and your staff communicate internally will change the way this nation works.
Let me offer my congratulations on being elected as the next President of the United States of America. I thank you for all the hope that you have brought the nation and the world, along with the change that you will bring. This is the first election I have voted in and I am proud to have supported you and your agenda. Thank you.
Sincerely, Ethan Bodnar

Congratulations to Presiden-Elect Obama! Election night was a remarkable and magical experience. I will always remember exactly where I was when they announced that Barack Obama was to be the next President of the United States of America. It is almost impossible to describe the feeling that I had at the moment in time. We immediately starting hugging friends and random people and made our way outside to celebrate with the large group of people that had gathered. We watched Barack Obama’s speech, during which I was emotional. The night concluded by spending some more time with friends and going on a walk through the dark night to take it all in and make phone calls to friends elsewhere. Thank you to everyone who made this possible, you have mine and the world’s gratitude. Change Can Happen!

This morning I voted for Barack Obama to be the next President of the United States of America. I went with my parents to the polls this morning and became part of history.
Today I spent some time making phone calls to battleground voters to make sure they went out to the polls and voted. Wished everyone a Happy Election Day. Wore my Yes We Can shirt and I Voted Today sticker. We will be having some large viewing parties around campus as well tonight.
To know that the world is going to change tonight is a little incomprehensible and highly anticipated. To simply put it, I feel absolutely happy today. Happy Election Day to you all!

Today is a remarkable day. The feeling and atmosphere of Election Day posseses a magical like quality. There is the possibility of change in the country and in the world.
Photos from Callie Shell, Find your Polling Locations, See who is Behind the Candidates, Look at people’s reactions on Twitter, You can follow the results on Current TV, Here is my first post on Barack Obama, See Coudal Partners Proclomation.
I wonder what election night will bring, what will happen, and what kind of country and world will we wake up to tomorrow. I am hopeful for the promise of something new and for the change that Barack Obama will bring by winning the election.
Today I would like to introduce a series of posters entitled This is Backwards.
Today in our world somethings are just Backwards. They are broken, wrong, and opposite of what they should be. They are headed in the wrong direction. Backwards is series of messages commenting on those political and social issues. By drawing attention to these issues and offering solutions we can have an impact.
Each poster has a single statement or sentence that is backwards, thus demonstrating and illustrating the problem. At the bottom of each poster there are the words “This is Backwards” which unifies the series of prints. Under that there are three suggestions to change and fix the backwards problem above.
They come as a set of three and are 11 inches by 17 inches each.
Shipping is included in price below based on your location. handled with care.
They have been produced on a digital printing press through a local printer that I have used before. The funds that I hope to make from creating these pieces of artwork will be put towards college, art supplies, and the living expenses of a design student.
From a design perspective, three different shade of blue are used to represent the progression that needs to be made. Three different serif type faces are used for the different backwards statements, Georgia, Rockwell, and American Typewriter. At the bottom the solutions and suggestions for fixing the problems are in Helvetica. Thanks for checking them out, please share the news with your friends, and I hope you get some for yourself and your walls.

Halloween last night was a good time, kids came trick or treating in our dorms, we went to the sculpture department’s performance night and hung out with a bunch of friends late into the night. The first three photos are from the performance pieces at the school and the following ones are documentation of friends throughout the night. Wishing all of you a good weekend.

Fifty People, One Question is a beautiful and magical short film by Benjamin Reece. You need to take seven minutes and watch this. Watch the short film in high deffintion.
We had an idea. Go to a place. Ask fifty people the same question. Film their responses.

Been having some good times with this little application that allows you to create Polaroid looking photos from your digital photographs. The results are great, as you can see from above.
Last night, a friend and I went to the the inaugural event for AIGA Connecticut, which is the Connecticut chapter of the American Institute for Graphic Artists. Sean Adams, the AIGA President gave an insightful and great talk on fear in the design business.
Over the last 10 years at AdamsMorioka, they’ve made mistakes. Big design mistakes. Some were a collision of events that hit like a train wreck. Some were self-produced. All of the mistakes were motivated by fear. When is fear appropriate in design? Are we on the Love Boat, or a voyage of the damned? How do we know the difference? Where are the lifeboats?
The next event is William Drenttel of Design Observer giving a talk on his so called public life, there is more information on that right here. Looking forward to joing this remarkable organization and I couldn’t be happier that it has been brought to this state. Even better, there is a student chapter that is being started at the Hartford Art School as well.

One of my new favorite blogs is entitled Smosch, it is just a beautiful online publication. It is a visual documentation of Sandra Juto’s life as an artist and illustrator. Be sure to engage in the photographs that can be found here. These two photos are from the site.

Apartamento is a recent online discovery that appears to be a good looking magazine that might just be worth our reading.
Apartamento is a new international editorial project dedicated to the world of interiors, born to tell the story of personal experiences and lifes through the spaces where we live and work. Everyday stories, seen without the usual masks of look-a-like interiors perfect to the millimeter, because in real life the variables are infinite and unpredictable, since every environment has got its own dynamics and peculiarities that make it special.
Apartamento aspire to be a source of inspiration, a new stimulating force to show how common people live, decorate their home and react to the same everyday life events that at some point might happen to all of us.

Project M is a brilliant project and initiative. They have a brand new website as well.
We are part of a design movement. We believe that ability equals responsibility. And we are not the only ones. So, we built a lab where designers like you can make a difference. We are building the tools that will build the future. And this is where you come in.

Malcolm Gladwell recently released his third book entitled Outliers. It has been added to my long list of books that I plan on consuming sometime in the future.
In this book I’m interested in people who are outliers—in men and women who, for one reason or another, are so accomplished and so extraordinary and so outside of ordinary experience that they are as puzzling to the rest of us as a cold day in August.
On August 30th I moved into my new living space at the University of Hartford where I am attending The Hartford Art School. I am very happy here and all the people are amazing. The photo above is of my roommate Jeff and I at one of the art shows.
The Hartford Art School is a remarkable place and I am very happy to be pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design here. It feels magical to be making art all the time, we go to the studio late at night to work and it is a great feeling to be producing creative work in this new atmosphere. The professors are very friendly and caring on top of just being knowledgeable and creative individuals. The way the school works is that the first year we all take the same courses as every other art student, this is called Foundation Year. This semester I have a great lineup of classes.
Drawing is providing an introduction to representational drawing, we have done a large self portrait, large charcoals drawings, interior and exterior spaces, photo reproduction and will be moving on to the figure shortly. 3D is a sculpture class in which we create three dimensional work and we are now focusing on linear pieces of work. And 2D Color is a color theory class based around painting, we have been doing color scales, abstract paintings, and exploring the way different colors work with other colors. As for non-artist classes I am taking a course on Western Heritage and a Rhetoric and Writing course.
The first week there was an Alumni Art Show that some friends of mine and I went to. This was before classes even started and it was great to see all the work in the gallery and talk with some of the teachers. The photos above are of us at the show and my two favorite pieces.
Then there was The Hartford Art School Faculty Show which was a great experience to see the artwork that our teachers have made recently. We met up with some of our teachers and the opening was packed. The photos above are from that show.
Several weeks ago, my mom and I attended the AIGA Design Gala event in New York City. It was a wonderful experience and that evening I was honored for receiving an AIGA Worldstudio Scholarship. I went on stage an took a bow and spent the rest of the night with fellow recipients and meeting designers and contributing artists to my book. I met Debbie Millman, Armin Vit, Troy Monroe and many others. I ran into Scott Belsky from Behance where I am interning. Also, Khoi Vinh came and introduced himself, he is the design director for the New York Times website. Stanley Hainsworth was generous enough to buy the table for the scholarship receipents and has been the creative director at Nike, Starbucks, and LEGO. Also, I was introduced to Richard Grefe, the executive director of the AIGA and Ivan Chermayeff, past AIGA Medalist. The photos above are from that night in the city.
We also attending Adam Machose’s solo show in Hartford. He is our drawing teacher and he presented a series of small acrylic portraits of friends and imaginary characters.
The completed manuscript for my first book, Creative Grab Bag, was sent off to my wonderful editor over at HOW Books at the end of August. I have received initial feedback on everything and they are very pleased with the outcome of the book and the direction we are moving forward with it. The book is scheduled to be published sometime later this year in the Spring of 2009. Thank you to everyone who has made the book what it is and to all of the contributing artists. It is a wonderful thing to create a book and I look forward to sharing it with you.
There have also been some changes around here on my weblog and personal website. The header has been designed as a cleaner version of the past one. As seen in the navigation at the top the structure of the site as also changed. The Blog is now located on the front page and the retired web address for the weblog is now serving as an archive. There is a Portfolio of graphic design work which will soon feature new work from The Hartford Art School, there is Books section which contains information on Creative Grab Bag and A New World Platform, along with the About section where you can learn more about myself.
In the Elsewhere section of the sidebar there have been the additions of Last.FM which tracks all of the music that I listen too and FriendFeed which combines all my online activity into one online space. For the time being Videos for Creatives, a weblog featuring video from the online creative world is being retired.
The other night we made some pasta in the kitchen on the bottom floor of our building. My roommate Jeff has started a radio show on campus and some friends and I sat in as guests for a little while. I got a typewriter for our place as well. And tried tea, some funky lights, and a live plant. A bunch of nights we worked in the studio for a while, late into the night. And during the week I get the New York Times for free, I read it every day. The photos below are from all of those experiences. You can see more pictures from all of the recent events including the art shows, the AIGA Design Gala, and my time at The Hartford Art School here.
The blog moving forward will have four main types of posts, Photography posts containing just photos from my life, Art School Work will feature photos from the work I have produced along with artists statements, Sharing Links will be a collection of links to other interesting things online, and then Normal Posts will be my own thoughts, stories, and projects.
I will soon be introducing a series of poster for sale, along with some new photography, recent projects from my art classes, and a brand new project that will document my art school career and life going forth in a new manner. Thanks to you all, your the best, see you soon.

On my trip to New York City last week I had the amazing opportuninty to stop by and visit with Paul Sahre at his studio. Paul is participating in Creative Grab Bag, my visual collaborative book and it was a great experience to meet him in person, discuss design and creativity with him, and view the space where he works.
Graphic designer, illustrator, educator, lecturer, foosballer and author Paul Sahre established his own design company in New York, in 1997. Consciously maintaining a small office, he has nevertheless established a large presence in American graphic design.
While I was there I interview him for Behance Magazine and that article will be up soon, you can view more photos of my visit here.

I can’t help but be drawn to the Happiest Book in the World by Alex Ostrowski. It just seems like such an amazing book by looking at the photos and hearing what its about, there is only one copy as of now, which makes me not happy at all. Alex shares with us the story behind this book.
In one way or another we are all looking for happiness. Some people even say that man’s sole purpose for existence is to hunt down and capture this intangible and elusive treasure. In 2006 researchers at The University of Leicester concluded that Denmark is the happiest country in the world - this was good enough for me. In March 2008 I made the decision to visit happiness, and embarked upon a pilgrimage to find it. My experiences are presented in this book.
Take a look at more photos of the book here.
To listen to them play these two songs provides such an amazing feeling. I was watching television late one night and this came on and I was blown away by Sigur Rós, I quickly recorded the show so that I can watch it in high definition whenever I want to. It is absolutely stunning piece of work.

Discovered Days With My Father online and it is a brilliant piece of online storytelling. By combining beautiful photographs with simple text it tells a heart warming and sad story. The piece develops the character of Phillip Toledano’s father through written memories and visual moments captured in time.

Just wanted to take a moment and provide an update on the book that I have been working on for over a year. The first announcement is that the book will be entitled Creative Grab Bag which is a name that I am very pleased with. This was approved a while ago and I have been trying to get around to telling you all. Before we go any farther here is some background on the book.
It is a visual collaborative book that forces creative people from around the world to explore their creativity. Each artist is randomly assigned a creative task that is not in the area of their expertise or training. The book is due to come out this spring and is being published by F+W Publications’ HOW Books.
At this point in time I am waiting for the final round of work to come in from the amazing people that have agreed to take part in the book, the final count will be one hundred artists. The list of artists has been updated on the book’s website.
Thanks to all so far for everything!

On a trip to New York City about a week ago I acquired for myself a Nikon D60 Digital SLR Camera and proceeded to walk out of the store with a new toy to capture the world with. For the past couple of years I have been using similar cameras that the school had provided. I have enjoyed capturing the lives and moments of my friends and I as we went through high school along with the many different things I observe in life.

Now as I prepare to enter art school it is even more important to me to observe and capture images. See what I see on my Flickr photostream, just signed up for the professional account as well. When you carry a camera you see the world more.
I have an idea of where and how I would like to spend the later years of my life. I don’t ever want to retire but I think this is how I would like to end up and be able to live out the rest of my days.
I plan to build a small house that combines modern and rustic into one livable and well designed package. It will be located on the coast of a Scandinavian country maybe, possibly Denmark or Sweden. I will have a greenhouse and garden to grow plants and food. I will stock the kitchen shelves with cookbooks and create dishes of food that are full of color for us.
I will have tons of books and read them on the beach all day long. I will fly kites and kayak in the ocean. I will think and ponder the world, I will write, design, and paint. I will ultimately create there in the middle of nowhere, in the middle of nature. I will make my own scarves and mittens and build snowmen with my grandchildren when they come to visit us. I will learn to play the piano again and compose music that I can call my own.
The house will have wooden floors and big windows. There will be neighbors but they will not be close by. I will have a cat and dog that are best friends and they will play all day on the beach with us. I will ride a bike as my only mode of transportation.
I think this is what will make me happy.
