Wall-E, The Film

This was a cinematic experience like no other. This movie captures the many aspects of human life in a little robot named Wall-E as he goes through his ordinary life, until one day he falls in love with a new robot and they go on an adventure together. While there was very little dialog, you were still able to connect to the characters and feel for them. And from a creative perspective the film was beautiful. I believe that this film will provide an entertaining theatrical experience to any one who sits down and witnesses the magic that is Wall-E.

The Talent of Mr. Hillman Curtis

Hillman Curtis recently released a brand new short film entitled Bridge along with a new site design. To me, Hillman Curtis has produced some of the most amazing short films that I have ever seen. He seems to capture the feelings and emotions of his characters perfectly. Without any true character development to build on, each film still has the immense feeling that you understand the people taking part in the story.
This is the talent of Hillman Curtis.

The Oscars 2008

Films are what bring people together. They express ideas through moving pictures. Stories are told by actors and actresses. It is all presented with art direction, sound, and more. They are created for us to watch and to escape into. For us to learn from and grow as citizens of the world. And they last for generations.

Last night I watched the 80th Academy Awards, where hundreds of millions of people came together as a world community to celebrate what all the people that make films have brought us. I watched the whole thing, from start to finish, and enjoyed every minute of it. Being a fan of Jon Stewart, I believe that what his hosting was well done and a success. Some of the big films, I still have yet to see, and I plan on doing so very soon.

I could not be more happy that Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová, who wrote Falling Slowly from the film Once, won Best Song. I rented it the day that it came out and thought that it was wonderful. And they even brought back Markéta because she didn’t get to say her thank you speech, I thought this was really great of them to do that. You can watch their speech from last night here and listen to the music here on Virb.

Several months ago we rented a movie and it had a significant impact on me. At the end, I kinda just sat there watching the credits go down the screen. And one of my parents asked me what I was looking for. I replied, “Nothing, just the people.” Thanks to all those people that have created the films of this year and of the years past.

A Motion Picture Shoot

There was an advertisement in the newspaper looking for extras (background actors) for the Disney movie called College Road Trip. I sent in an email and ended up being selected. Here is the story of my experience and what I learned from being on the set of a movie shoot.

I was number nine and had a call time of 7:24 on Thursday morning. I arrived around 6:50 and the parking lot was full of trailers and tracker trailer trucks that had brought all the equipment to the location. I waited for a while until the school cafeteria had filled up with tons of kids. Eventually, around 8:00 I was sent down to wardrobe where I was given a cranberry sweater vest and was told to change into my khaki pants and white shirt. Then I sat around for another hour and a half, met some people and was called around 9:30 for a shoot.

First, they had a bunch of us just walk across the hallway as the re-shot the scene many times. Next, we went outside and did another scene. This time I sat on a bench next to a lady and a man was standing up talking to us. We were there to pantomime (move your mouth without any sounds coming out) to each other and in middle of takes we talked about there careers and what I was planning on doing with my life. The man was a retired electrician from Brooklyn who had been doing this for about two years. He had been a background actor with some famous actors. The lady had started off in the theater and had been doing this for twenty years. She was recently the neighbor of the murder victim on Law and Order and lives in Manhattan.

Once this shot was done we headed back to the cafeteria and had lunch. The food was really good and all of was made on location. They had hug trucks and tents that the food was cooked and served in. We had chicken, fish, pasta, corn, full salad bar, cake, and more. The actors and the crew got even better food. The around 1:00 they took groups of us to the next set which was in the gym. They had it set up as a court room and had a set of bleachers pulled out from the wall in which we were sitting on. There were two table in which the main actors sat at and we were behind them. The cameras faced us the entire time and I will most likely be in the shot.

Now let’s break it down on how the shoot works and how everything happened as I was sitting there.

First, let’s go over who was there, from the stars, to all the different jobs the crew did. For well known actors we had Martin Lawrence, Raven-Symoné, Margo Harshman, and if you have kids or are a kid you might know Lucas Grabeel, and Brenda Song. They all said hello to the crowd but we didn’t really interact with them on an individual level. Martin Lawrence was always laughing and the younger actors just chilled like normal teenagers when they weren’t being shot.

Now for the crew, there were a ton of jobs that I observed including the camera men and their assistants, the people who pushed around the camera equipment carts, the guy who put tape on the floor so people would know where to stand, the guy that measured the distance from the camera to the actors, the people that controlled the extras, the photographers that photographed the props and us so that if we had to re-shoot we could put everything back in its place, all the important people who sat in those foldable chairs and watched the monitors that displayed what was being shot, the makeup people, all of the lighting people, the behind the scenes camera man, the sound guy that held the microphone over the set, the director and the assistant director, the body guards, the hair guy, the clapper board person, and so many more people.

Now that I got all of that out of the way, these are the procedures that everybody went through before the camera started rolling and in-between all of the takes.

So there are four cameras shooting the whole time form all different angles. The assistant director tells us what to do, Basically, we were either in listening mode, clapping mode, standing, clapping and cheering mode, or surprised mode.

Then there were the commands and prompts that the assistant directors, director, and other people who were in charge yelled out before anything could happen. First came THIS IS A PICTURE, which meant that this wasn’t a rehersal and it wsa going to be filmed. Then they yelled LOOK OVERS, which was when the makeup and hair people came in and took care of the actors and actresses. Then sometime they would yell RESET which meant people went back to their original positions or they yelled POSITION ONE or they just siad what line we were taking it from. Then they yelled SOUND ROLLING and that’s when you had to be quiet. Next, they yelled BACKGROUND which is when any background movement started. Finally, they yelled ACTION which led to the camera man saying SET and after that people started acting and moving. And when it was all done they yelled CUT. Even better was when they yelled CHECKING THE GATE which meant they were seeing if they got the footage they needed. If they did they yelled the GATE IS GOOD.

It was over around 6:00 and I headed down to wardrobe to give them back there items and change back into some normal clothes. Then I handed in a piece of paper so they could pay me and the long day had come to an end.

(If you are wondering where all the amazing photos I could’ve taken are they didn’t allow cameras, sorry. And that had to be the longest post that I have ever written, thanks for reading if you made it this far!)

Films

I have seen man movies lately and I thought I might as well do a quick review for each of them. Furthermore, I am taking a film study course in school.

On The Waterfront
This movie, directed by Elia Kazan, was enjoyable to watch. It received eight oscars and is in the list of Top 100 films. Marlon Brando plays the lead has a person who works on the waterfront. The story includes murder, love, and labor unions.

Punch Drunk Love
A wonderfully shot movie with a slow moving plot. Adam Sandler is the lead as he tries to figure out his life. The film has many symbols and themes which you can pick up.

Citizen Kane
The number one movie of all time, directed by Orson Welles, was truly wonderful. The film is about a man whose life story is told to you in the beginning through a news reel. The reporters then try to find out what his dying words, “Rosebud” mean. The film used flashbacks the best I have ever seen them done.

Spider Man 3
The most expensive movie of all time was not all that it was said to be. My friends and I did not enjoy the film. Sections of it were absurd, the action wasn’t the greatest, and it had around three endings. However, the trailer for Harry Potter and Pirates of the Caribbean look really good.

The Science of Sleep

The Science of Sleep is a movie about a man who can not decipher is dreams from reality. It was quite well done but at the same time is not action packed. The story was a wonderful one and was shot beautifully.

An Inconvient Truth

“An Inconvenient Truth” is Al Gore’s documentary about global warming, as I am sure many of you know. The film was good and presented the issue quite well. The film shows us that Global Warming is a big issue that needs to be addressed.

However, there were some problems that my friends and I found with it. First, the graphs were not labeled to specifically. Which I suppose is all right, you still are able to understand them. Second, intertwined in the documentary were clips of his life where he would share past stories that were not really related to global warming. This was some what unnecessary, but it probably worked better for people who just don’t care about the facts and want to hear his stories and see that he is a real person.

Overall, I think it was a success and I am glad to see that global warming is being talked about.

The Queen

A little while ago I walked down to the small local movie theater in town to see “The Queen” with some friends. It was a brilliant movie to say the least. The whole thing was beautifully shot and the character development was astounding. The actors and actress did a wonderful job and fit their roles very well. Especially Helen Mirren, who played the queen. She won best actress in a drama at the Golden Globes.

The movie is about when Princess Diana and Tony Blair had just become the Prime Minister. It highlighted the conflict between the queen’s opnions of the way her death should be handled and the prime ministers opnion. One of my favorite parts was when the Queen was driving down a hunting road in the middle of the forest and got stuck in a river. She jumped out, checked what was wrong with the Land Rover (she was a mechanic in the war) and called for help. This is the Queen of England we are talking about, alone in the woods.

I highly recomend that you see it.

The Nativity Story – A Good Christmas Movie

What a relief. A found a Christmas movie that is actaully good. The Nativity Story is a movie that tells the story of the Birth of Christ. No more of this crazy “comedy” Christmas movie nonsense. This film seems to be nicely made and put together. I encourage you to check out the trailer.

Copy Goes Here

I found Coudal Partners a while ago and have been reading their site ever since. Their links provide so many interesting sites for me to visit along with all their other unique projects. I find that it is great that they don’t only do client work but do other projects that interest their readers online. The advertising platform that they created called “The Deck” and “Photoshop Tennis” are examples of those projects.

They currently are working on a project called 72 degrees. Its a short movie that takes place in an old computer room. They have been blogging about it from the start and have provided some interesting insight in to the process.

One of their projects I was actually lucky enough to purchase. They created a short film titled “Copy Goes Here”. This is ingenous short film that takes place in their studio about a copy writer that they hire. I dont want to spoil it so I won’t go any farther. You can watch it for free here and buy it here.

GUI Design on TV & in the Movies

As I was watching 24 one night a little while ago, I remembered something that I had wondered about. How did they make all those computer screeens come to life with a graphic user interfaces and data? We can see these in movies and on television shows. And I thought to myself what a unique job to design all those around the story that is being told.

I am assuming that they are done in Flash since the actresses and actors have to interact with them. If any of you have done any work like this or know someone who does let me know.
